Dead Space 2 (2011)

Dead Space is one of those games, where you know something horrible is going to happen, probably on a regular basis, but you still don't know when and where. But when it does finally happen, it tends to occur in far more gruesome way than expected. Which makes for a great horror game.

Visceral Games -the developers- got this element right so many times in the 'Dead Space' series. But, there was definitely one scene within the 2nd game, that stood out for us. You enter a room, and in this room is, what looks like a standard MRI machine, except there's a catch, there's a needle built into the machine used for extracting information. This is where you come in. Isaac must enter the machine, and as the player, you must take control of the needle, carefully direct it, and penetrate his eyeball.

However, If the player does not successfully line up the needle to Isaac's pupil or allows his heart rate to become too high, the machine will malfunction. The entire needle apparatus suddenly drops down, and impales Isaac through his eye as he screams in pain. The needle attempts to retract but ends up drilling in further, eventually piercing into Isaac's brain and causing his death.

Mortal Kombat X (2015)

Mortal Kombat has been around since 1992, and -quite rightly- has became one of the most successful fighting franchises in the history of video games.

The series holds a reputation for its high levels of blood and gore, including -most notably- its Fatalities. Mortal Kombat games have always had extreme amounts of violence in them, even dating back to 1992 -It may not have looked as good, but it was still there- and everyone who's played the games, will agree that Mortal Kombat can be quite creative, especially when it comes to 'Fatalities'. 'Mortal Kombat X' holds one of the most disturbing death scenes yet. During the main story mode, D'Vorah confronts Mileena, upon defeating her the emperor gives his permission to 'Finish Her.'

D'Vorah executes Mileena with a lethal kiss -commonly known to players as the ‘kiss of death’- feeding her countless parasitic insects that proceed to devour her face from the inside. Wonderful.

God Of War 3 (2010)

God Of War was first released in 2005, and introduced us to Kratos a man who has little remorse or mercy when it comes to his foes.

If you've played the 'God Of War' series, you've clearly witnessed his methods of brutally slaying enemies, ranging from thousands of little minions sent by the Olympian Gods, to the actual Gods themselves. But it's the point when Kratos encounters Helios, that things really start to get brutal. Not only does Kratos -being the wrecking machine he is- beat Helios black and blue, he finds it a pretty good idea to pull the head from his still breathing, still living body.

The process is both slow and horrific, as the player gets to witness the beauty, of every single tendon and muscle be torn from Helios's shoulders.

Mafia 2 (2010)

The Mafia series started way back in 2002, when the game was released for Microsoft Windows. Fast forward 8 years later, and we had 'Mafia 2' in our hands.

In 'Mafia 2' you take control of 'Vito Scaletta', a war veteran who -unfortunately- becomes caught up with the Mafia when trying to pay back his father's debts. Vito comes to the decisions that he doesn't want to live a common life in the slums, so what would his choice be? - Well, Vito figures it best that he goes down the organised crime route.

As you progress through the story, you will eventually reach the death scene of 'Henry' -one of Vito's friends- that occurs in chapter 13 of the game. Vito and Joe approach Lincoln Park to meet with Henry, but as they get closer, they see him on the ground being attacked by several Triads, with meat cleavers. Though Vito and Joe manage to stop the attack, they're too late and Henry dies of his injuries.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)

Wolfenstein has been around since the 80's, and is still going -with a good following- which for us, fully solidifies it as a cult classic, there's no doubt about that.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was released back in 2014, and is a soft reboot of the franchise, which builds an entirely new chronology, set in an alternate universe where the Axis powers win World War II. Despite it’s great story-line and action packed game-play, there was one scene in particular that made us wince.

During the beginning of the game, you will encounter 'General Deathshead' -or 'Wilhelm Strasse' in previous encounters- the main antagonist. As the scene continues, you will be forced to make a difficult decision, at which point you must choose which one of your friends will have their eyes gauged out. It's quite a disturbing scene, as you witness the immense pain being dealt to the character, and not only will their eyes be removed, but later on in the game their brains will be too. There are various changes to the scene, depending on who you choose, so if you want to witness it over and over again, feel free.

Tomb Raider (2013)

Surely you've played Tomb Raider, weather it was the 1996 entry, or 2015's Rise Of The Tomb Raider. Oh Lara, how we've watched you change over the years. Literally.

We were all prone to swan dive from the highest point we could find, weather it was water at the bottom or not, simply just to see what would happen. Well if you thought that was bad, you haven't witnessed the newest instalments of the game. It's got quite a dark edge to it, with it's underground tombs, and tribal caves. Plenty of injuries occur throughout the game, including falling from a height and piercing your leg on a spike, to simply tumbling down huge hills of dirt, But nothing quite compares to the horrific scenes that appear if you fail specific events. One scene stands out from the rest, in which you're rapidly being forced down a stream of rushing water, filled with a bunch of debris and plane parts. Using your skills to dodge and weave from side to side seems easy enough, but if you fail to do so, you will find Lara becomes impaled, face first, on a well placed spike.

cut to black & white death scene.

Outlast: Whistleblower (2014)

Outlast was without a doubt one of the most terrifying games to hit the gaming scene, and brought some pretty gory and detailed scenes with it. So it's no surprise when the DLC Outlast: Whistleblower arrived, we would encounter some more grotesque gaming gore.

During the play-through of Outlast: Whistleblower, you encounter a psychopath, and notice that he has some poor soul strapped to some sort of modified operating table. Doesn't sound so bad right? - Well, the thing that makes this scene rather dark -and quite frankly, disturbing- is the fact the psychopath grabs a pair of scissors, and repeatedly stabs the victim in the crotch over and over again. While all you can do, is watch. You sick bunch.

Saints Row 2 (2008)

A lot of people in the gaming community who have played both the Saints Row and GTA franchise, will no doubt say that the two do have a lot in common, despite Grand Theft Auto having more 'maturity' into its typical sandbox game-play and story.

Saints Row on the other hand, isn’t too concerned about maturing in terms of wacky content. Despite Saints Row being crass and wacky, it still has the ability to pull off some gruesome deaths. During the play-through of Saints Row 2, the protagonist (You) will encounter 3 gangs, one of them being ‘The Brotherhood’. During the conflict between the Saints and The Brotherhood, you must mix toxic waste into a private supply of their tattoo ink which leads to the burning of their leader's face.

In retaliation, his girlfriend kidnaps your friend Carlos and chains him to the back of a pickup truck. Eventually killing the driver of the truck, you run over to Carlos. Severely burnt and in terrible agony, you realise there is only one way to help Carols, therefore are forced to put him out of his misery, with a bullet to the head.

Red Dead Redemption (2010)

At the end of 'Rockstar Games' 'Red Dead Redemption', our main protagonist John Marston finds himself confronted by more than twenty soldiers, all armed to the teeth, and aiming in his direction. During this time, the camera switches to the Dead-Eye Targeting mode and allows the player to take control the last stand of John Marston.

The game generally allows you to take out a few, but -unfortunately- not all of the soldiers. As he starts shooting, John is met with round after round of gunfire. Covered in his own blood, he drops to his knees, taking several winded gasps of air and spitting blood. Eventually, it becomes too much, John falls onto his back, a dying man, and takes one last breath.

Until Dawn (2015)

At first glace, Until Dawn probably seems like your typical horror game, full of stolen gimmicks from years of slasher flicks, and mechanics borrowed from the likes of Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, where as it's actually a game that's stands on it's own very well in the horror genre.

During one scene -involving a mine-shaft- while trying to catch Jessica, Mike must take shortcuts, and try not to stumble and fall while running after her, because if he fails to save her, a Wendigo while appear and tear her jaw off, then continue to dispose of her down an elevator shaft. During the mine escape, either alone or with Matt, there are several options that will effect this scene. If you fail to remain still, decide to run away, don't catch up with the other person, or simply fail to make a decision, the Wendigo will catch up to Jessica and again, rip off her jaw.
